Resistant hypertension and renal denervation: what do the guidelines say? A nephrologist perspective
O LiangosArterial hypertension continues to be a major risk factor for premature cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Blood pressure control rates remain stubbornly low, typically not exceeding 60%. As a response, an increasing number of diverse management guidelines have been published by various governmental and nongovernmental organizations around the world. The present perspective attempts to summarize the most important guidelines for resistant hypertension with a special focus on catheter-based renal denervation. Summary tables facilitate direct comparison of individual guidelines. In addition, the latest trial results on renal denervation for resistant hypertension are critically reviewed.
